Quality Management

Approval Process

PMETB is the sole competent authority responsible for the approval of posts and programmes that directly contribute to the award of a CCT. Trainee doctors who wish to receive a CCT at completion of their training must follow a PMETB approved curricula in PMETB approved training posts and programmes.

Using the Generic standards for training, PMETB assess each application and grant conditional or unconditional approval, taking into account the views of the Deanery and the college or faculty.

Approval of a Specialty Training Programme

To receive approval of a training programme Heads of Training and/or Programme Directors must complete and submit a PMETB FORM A to the Deanery's Administrative Officer (Hospital). The application will be considered by the Postgraduate Dean and then forwarded to PMETB. PMETB will notify the Deanery of the outcome. NOTE: For General Practice requests for approval should be submitted to the GP Administration Team.

PMETB do not require a FORM B for each post that makes up part of the programme. However Progamme Directors must be able to identify each of the posts (ST posts, FTSTA posts and LTFT posts) within the approved programme for future monitoring and quality assurance purposes.

If changes need to be made to an approved training programme then an amended Form A should be submitted to the Deanery with a covering letter outlining the reason for the changes.

NOTE: PMETB will not retrospectively approve posts or programmes - there are no exceptions.

Approval of a Foundation Training Programme.

PMETB only requires that the Deanery delivers its Foundation programmes according to the approved curriculum requirements and ensures that Foundation Doctors have the opportunity to achieve the competencies and outcomes for F2. The quality assurance of Foundation Programmes (QAFP) will contine as a joint collaborative activity between GMC and PMETB.
