RITAs (including documentation)

These are compulsory formal interviews at the Yorkshire Deanery. You will be seen by either Dr Evans or myself and one other trainer. RITA “C” certificates are completed and forwarded to the Royal College. These are mandatory for completion of training. You will receive an appointment. If you think you have been forgotten for goodness sake let us know. If it is any consolation, we usually only forget the trouble free trainees.

The year one RITA (ST3)

Usually in the May after an August start, or in the November after a February start.

Here, we assess the year up to the following July. You arrive with a logbook (RCA one is fine) Please tease out the work you have done SINCE starting as registrar. There are three different ways to do this on the RCA logbook, none are easy to do. Use “Help” or ask a colleague.
Some Workplace assessments (WBA) and modular assessment forms and the General unit WBA paperwork. At this stage you will have probably just moved in to the Teaching hospital and are getting stuck into Key modules.
PLEASE BRING PHOTOCOPIES as the Deanery photocopier is not to be used by us. Thanks to whoever broke it. Neither you, me or the Deanery can be relied on not to lose paperwork.

Checklist:

N.B. All workplace based assessments and modular assessment forms must be photocopied before the RITA (no photocopying available at the Deanery)

  • Workplace assessments for all completed Key and General Units of training. The Key Units of training consist of an in-theatre assessment and a workplace assessment; the General Units of training only require an in-theatre assessment.
  • A completed Summative Assessment form from their College Tutor
  • Log Book (Please use the royal college format for the portfolio report where possible).
  • A completed log book summary and listed CPD activity from the previous year (please print out the logbook summary from your own logbook)

Any trainee that has been overseas since their last RITA will need to bring an A4 sheet minimum with an account of their educational activities during their ORT (Off Rotation Training).

The year two RITA (ST4)

Usually in the May after an August start or in the November after a February start.

Here, you arrive with a logbook (RCA one is fine) a full set of Key unit WBAs and modular assessment forms and the General unit paperwork.
PLEASE BRING PHOTOCOPIES
You also arrive with a nice letter from the Royal College saying that you have passed the FRCA. Now we can compute your CCT (completion of training date) This will be three years after the end of year two. An SpR 1 / 2 training certificate can be completed and copied by yourself to the Royal College.

In the event of you not having the FRCA by the end of your second calendar year of training (INCLUDING LAT TIME) we will be unable to sign you off for year two. Instead a RITA “E” form will be completed. You will have one year to get the FRCA or equivalent. During this time your training clock stops and effectively your CCT date is delayed. The clock is restarted the day after you get the exam.
If you still have not passed by the end of the year on a RITA E, you will then have to leave the rotation. It is still possible to re enter if you get the exam within a year of leaving, but you would have to wait (probably to the next training intake) until it is convenient for us to take you.

On a less gloomy note, the vast majority of trainees make all this on time and we only do two or three RITA Es a year.

You will also have some idea where you would like to be in year three. Those who have passed the FRCA early will have research and supervisors set up. Others may prefer to polish off modules and get caseload experience by doing year four (DGH) next.
