Everyday Issues
Annual Leave
This is booked at departmental level. Both Leeds trusts now have a full shift system and need at least six weeks notice.
Study Leave
In general, demand for paid study leave from SpR 1s is low, but this tends to increase as the years go by. We do not generally support external fellowship courses given that the local FLAT course has generally good feedback. In the event of you getting onto a RITA E due to persistent exam failure Dr Alistair Fale, the Regional Study Leave coordinator (based at the LGI) will do what he can.
There is a limited budget for external leave, resuscitation courses, meetings and specialist societies. Reasonable travel expenses to the Exam will be met. Form SL1 (available from the deanery website), or individual departments must be completed and sent to Alistair. Please consult him in advance if the application is in any way controversial!
Problems / Stress
You will be allocated a learning mentor at your base hospital. Most stuff can be sorted out at a local level. That said, the Leeds hospitals are large, impersonal and in the past trainees have felt intimidated in letting us know. Don’t be afraid, We have mostly heard it all before! However, if you don’t think we are the ones to help….
The Yorkshire deanery run a confidential phone line “ Take time” for struggling doctors 0113 343 4642. or email taketime@leeds.ac.uk
Register with a GP if you are arriving from elsewhere. It really simplifies things if you need one suddenly!
