How much are the courses?
All our Courses are free of charge to delegates in the Yorkshire area.

Are these courses accredited?
All our courses are accredited by the Royal College of Physicians, you will gain 6 CPD points for each full day and 3 CPD points for a half day course.

When and how should I apply for courses I would like to attend in the future as I know they do get fully booked quite quickly.
Our courses are planned 6 months to a year in advance and availabilty is published twice a year i.e courses due to commence January to July would be advertised August or September of the year before and likewise, courses from September to December would be advertised in December or January. Once courses are fully booked, on receipt of a completed application form, you would be placed on a reserve list and should any vacancy arise you would be notified immediately. Also delegates on reserve lists do get priority notice of the next batch of courses, thereby giving them the chance to apply and secure their place before the courses are distributed throughout the area. Application forms are available from here at the Deanery or at an Education Centre. Alternatively, you can print one from this website.

Which courses should I apply for and at what stage of my training?
The recommended pathway (below) acts as a general guide:

  • Years One / Two - Research Skills Module, Core Module
  • Years Three / Four - Legal and Ethical Issues Module & Teaching, Group Facilitation and Presenting Module, Core Module
  • Years Four / Five - Management and Leadership Development Module
  • Years Five / Six - Career Management Module, Appraisal and Development of Trainees Module
  • Consultant Level - Selection Interviewing & Employment Law Module, Supervising, Supporting and Mentoring Module

Do I need to attend all sessions within a module?
Only on the Core, Research and Management and Leadership Development modules are you expected to attend all sessions listed. You can apply to attend all sessions of the other modules if you wish but these are ‘stand alone' courses too.

Can I mix individual course sessions between different Modules?
Once you are booked onto a Core, Research or Management & Leadership Development module you are expected to attend all sessions listed. If you cannot attend any of the sessions, contact us as soon as possible and we will try to accommodate you on one of the other modules for this specific session. Please bear in mind that all our courses get fully booked quickly and we can only do this if places are still available on the other modules.

Where can I find information on other courses in the Yorkshire area?
Contact your Education Centre at the hospital where you are employed, they should be able to help you. If you would like a list of the Education Centres please refer to our Contact and Links section above

I would like to attend an Education and Management course at the Yorkshire Deanery but I am employed elsewhere.
As our funding is specifically for training doctors in the Yorkshire Deanery area we have to accept applications from our own doctors before offering places to delegates outside the area. If vacancies still exist near the course date then places could be offered to people outside our area. The only exception to this is Training the Trainers where we do accept people from outside but they would have to pay a course fee.

If a course is full and I have completed an application form, does this mean I will automatically be booked onto the next available course?
Once courses are full and we receive your application form, your details are automatically added to our waiting list. If a vacancy arises you will be offered a place. If you are still on the waiting list by the time the next programme of courses is finalised we will send you details of the new dates, along with another application form for you to complete and return to us selecting the dates which suit you best.

Why have you introduced a ‘contribution’ charge for the courses?
If delegates fail to attend a course without giving prior notice, we are unable to fill the place. However, even if we have a couple of days warning we have a list of doctors who can, at short notice, manage to be released from work. If places remain unfilled we still have to pay for course materials, handouts, catering and refreshments. There are long waiting lists for places on the Deanery courses and unfilled places means that, eventually, we have to try to provide more courses to fulfill the demand. The Deanery, like other organisations, has to be very rigorous in financial management. We would appreciate your understanding and co-operation in this matter.
