Membership in Special Needs Dentistry

The Membership in Special Needs Dentistry is under the auspices of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The Exam is in two parts:

Part 1 has a focus on basic sciences and applied sciences of relevance to the clinical practice of special needs dentistry. The main focus of Part 2 is the Principles and Practice of Special Needs Dentistry. There is a requirement to submit a log diary, a format of which can be downloaded from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Part 2 is usually held over 2 days. The examination consists of two, three hour papers. In addition, there are two vivas on special needs dentistry in general and relevant human disease. Clinical photographs, radiographs and study models or patients form the subjects of clinical examinations and further viva voces. The College also issue a suggested reading list.

The Membership in Special Needs Dentistry examination is very relevant to the discipline of Special Needs Dentistry. It is designed to assess an understanding of basic principles and their clinical application. Furthermore, the candidate is able to demonstrate their knowledge and experience in the management of a variety of patients with special needs.
