Becoming a Vocational Dental Practitioner

Vocational training for general dental practice has been mandatory since 1993. New graduates who wish to enter into general dental practice will be required to work in approved training practices for 12 months after graduation. The concept is that vocational training will help refine and develop those skills acquired during the undergraduate course. The objectives of Vocational Training are that the trainee should be eligible to practice unsupervised as a principal within the General Dental Service at the end of the training period.

The importance of the role of the GDP trainer and "in practice" training in relation to practice administration and professional responsibilities cannot be over-emphasised.

Vocational dental practitioners attend a course of 30 study days spread over the year. There are four schemes in the Yorkshire Region with educational day release courses based at Postgraduate Centres in Dewsbury, Wakefield, York and Hull with each scheme having up to twelve vocational dental practitioners. Peer review, clinical audit, a clinical case presentation and joint trainer/VDP table clinic display are undertaken during the year.

Finance

A Vocational Dental Practitioner is employed as an assistant, under a standard contract by the trainer for a period of twelve months, or for up to twenty-four months for a part-time trainee. The trainee receives a salary, currently £2,449 per month, which is paid by the trainer who is then reimbursed for both the salary and employer's costs.
