Retaining and Returning The role of the Dental Workforce Advisor is to help dentists, therapists and hygienists at those times during their careers when they feel they are insufficiently skilled to provide safe and effective care for their patients. Terry Brown is the Workforce Support Advisor for the Yorkshire Deanery. Terry has been in general practice for 25 years and brings to the post his experiences as a trainer in Vocational training and as a Personal Development Tutor.
Are you Planning to take a break from dentistry? Returning after a career break? Worried about your or a colleagues poor performance? Struggling to keep up to date with CPD requirements?
If any of the above applies to you then the Returning and Retraining Advisor is here at the Yorkshire Deanery to help you.
Common problems encountered by dentists, hygienists or therapists returning after a career break can be – lack of confidence, non-compliance with GDC re-certification requirements, loss of key skills, lack of contact with other dental professionals, poor understanding of the new NHS contract, no VT number and sometimes just a feeling that the world of dentistry has moved on leaving you behind. If you identify with any of these then a chat with Terry may be the first step back to safe, effective and rewarding practice.
What can the RRA do for me? First and foremost the RRA is a colleague you can talk to in confidence about any matter that is adversely affecting your professional life. The RRA will tailor the help provided to your personal circumstances. This may be simply a telephone call or email or the RRA may arrange a meeting to talk through problems and work out a plan to get things back on track.
What do I do next? If you or a colleague would like to talk to Terry about returning to practice or about retraining then you can either phone Terry at the deanery, a Friday morning is best. Or, you can email Terry at: t.brown@yorkshiredeanery.com
