Foundation Training

Allocation to F2 posts

Allocation to an F2 post will depend upon the doctor achieving, or having achieved, Full Registration with the General Medical Council and/or successfully completed an F1 Year.

Local recruitment to F2 posts in Yorkshire hospitals takes place about half-way through the F1 Year. Recruitment is initially from those F1 doctors currently in place in Yorkshire and is organised by the local foundation schools. Any vacancies are then advertised in the BMJ around March/April each year.

Yorkshire Foundation Schools

There are two foundation schools in Yorkshire - West Yorkshire Foundation School and North Yorkshire and East Coast Foundation School.

F2 posts are one year rotations containing a mix of specialties and some include a rotation through General Practice.

Assessment and Validation

F2 doctors in Yorkshire hospitals use the national learning portfolio or e-portfolio and the Yorkshire Deanery supplement. Please view the information on the Appraisal and Assessment page. The national assessment tools used are those piloted and validated by Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) as follows:-

  • CbD (cased based discussion
  • DOPS (direct observation of clinical skills)
  • mini-CEX (clinical evaluation exercise)
  • mini PAT (peer assessment tool) See the link below to the relevant website.

Feedback is completed by trainees at the end of each placement by completing Placement Assessment Forms which are forwarded by the trainee to the Yorkshire Deanery. A RITA (record of in training assessment) form is completed following the final summative assessment at the end of the F2 year. Successful completion of the above will allow the issue of the F2 Achievement of Competence Document(FACD) and the trainee can move forward to Specialty Training.
