Foundation Training

Appraisal and Assessment in the Foundation Years

Validation procedures with effect from August 2006.

The new national Learning Portfolio has been developed by Modernising Medical Careers to be completed by all foundation doctors working in the United Kingdom.

Within Yorkshire the two Foundation Schools operate slightly different systems:

North Yorkshire and East Coast Foundation School

Assessments in the NYEC Foundation School are recorded on the nyec website which enables doctors to track their progress compared to their peers within the School.

West Yorkshire Foundation School

The Scottish national e-portfolio process is currently being piloted for Foundation Doctors in the West Yorkshire Foundation School.

Doctors in both foundation schools use the nationally developed assessment tools in line with guidance in the Foundation Curriculum, i.e. mini-CEX, DOPs, CBD and mini-PAT.

Trainees should keep any certificates of attendance at, for example, resuscitation training courses and any other relevant documentation.

At the end of the foundation year one, F1 doctors have a final assessment and RITA meeting with the Foundation School Director/ Foundation Training Programme Director at which the RITA form (included within the Yorkshire Deanery Foundation Assessment Guide) is completed and signed.

The Yorkshire Deanery Foundation Assessment Guide can be downloaded (see end of this article).
