Foundation Training
Portfolios
Each foundation trainee uses the national Foundation Learning Portfolio which covers the whole two year programme. The portfolio is available to download at UKFPO website. In Yorkshire the two foundation schools have a slightly different approach to the Foundation Learning Portfolio:
In the North Yorkshire and East Coast Foundation School, the portfolio is issued in a paper-based format to trainees at the start of F1 and to those who move in at F2. The ‘Tools of the Trade’ assessments are carried out on paper, using the standard forms, which allows trainees to keep a copy in their portfolio. The portfolio is used in tandem with the nyecfs website, which is a mechanism of recording and summarising the assessments which have taken place. Trainees can keep track of their own assessments and see how they measure up to their fellow trainees in terms of number of assessments completed within the timescales allowable.
The portfolio is an important document which should be carefully maintained and kept. It is possible that the public elements of its content may be required at specialty interviews, and it will certainly offer trainees a useful source of information when completing application forms and interviews for future training.
The West Yorkshire Foundation School uses the NES (NHS Education for Scotland)e-portfolio, which has been adapted to the English system and contains the same ‘Tools of the Trade’ assessments. There is no paper document and all assessments including self-assessments and PDP recording is undertaken online by either the trainee or the educational supervisor.

The e-portfolio allows the individual educational supervisors and the Foundation School to keep a track on trainees’ progress.
