Acute Medicine
Educational Resources
These pages contain educational resources for both educational supervisors and trainees.
Each trainee in Acute Medicine is expected to gain an ‘additional skill’ – something that is related to Acute Medicine but extra to the curriculum. This need not be a practical skill. Examples from around the UK include management/leadership training and academic medical education. Some Yorkshire rotations also provide the opportunity to learn Tilt Testing. The pages on the left give further information on the most popular additional skills.
**Trainees should be aware that training in a practical skill should be to a level recommended by the relevant governing body for that skill.**
The recommended reading and course list for educational supervisors can be found here
The recommended reading and course list for trainees can be found here.
Knowledge-based assessment (KBA) in Acute Medicine will start from 2009. This consists of a written MCQ-style examination.
Acute Medicine e-Learning Programme
ACUMEN is an e-learning resource being developed by the Federation of Royal Colleges of Physicians in association with the Department of Health and is part of the e-Learning for Healthcare (e-LfH) programme. ACUMEN aims to supply high quality, peer reviewed content which will be available at no cost to all trainees in CMT and acute medicine in the UK and will be based on realistic, interactive clinical scenarios.

Out of programme experience must be approved by the Deanery and Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB). There are currently long delays in this process so please make enquiries well in advance.
Research projects and publications in Acute Medicine are encouraged. If you have or need an idea, please talk to your educational supervisor or training programme director.
We wanted to make some of this page a Wiki, but that was technically difficult, so if you would like to add recommended reading and courses, please e-mail them to nicola.cooper@leedsth.nhs.uk – thanks!
