Resources for Tilt Testing

Tilt testing is used to investigate suspected neurally-mediated syncope or unexplained syncope or falls, as per the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines.

Syncope is an extremely common problem in Acute Medicine and something which is often managed suboptimally. Training in tilt testing involves learning about the evaluation and treatment of syncope, the ESC guidelines, practical tilt testing, carotid sinus massage, autonomic function testing, and ultimately what would be needed to set up a syncope service as a consultant in Acute Medicine.

There are three centres in Yorkshire which have a tilt testing service: Leeds, Bradford and mid-Yorkshire.

Although there is no formal curriculum for training in tilt testing, trainees are expected to gain the knowledge, skills and experience that a consultant running a syncope service would require.

The pdf file tilt testing information and protocols (Leeds) contains basic information about tilt testing, including the minimum recommended reading for trainees. You should also look out for conferences on syncope.
