The surrounding area

Dewsbury is a small but densely populated area, with around 171,000 residents. It was traditionally a heavy woollen district but today most of the textile mills have disappeared but plenty of fine Victorian architecture still stands. The heart of Dewsbury retains its charm as a traditional market town.  Nowadays industry concentrates on engineering and services.  As in keeping with the rest of Yorkshire there has been a significant increase in house building.

Dewsbury’s central location in both West Yorkshire and Northern England has many advantages. Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield are only a short drive away while Sheffield, Manchester and York are easily accessible via the motorway network in under an hour, giving access to professional opera, ballet and theatre and a wide range of top class sporting facilities. The Lake District and the Yorkshire Coast are within easy reach for day trips.

Dewsbury and District Hospital

The hospital offers a comprehensive range of medical, rehabilitation and surgical specialties and the facilities and environment are of a high standard. Approximately 1700 staff are employed on the Dewsbury site, offering a wide range of high quality services, primarily to the residents of North Kirklees, a population of 176,000. Our population is diverse, with approximately 11% coming from ethnic minority groups. A significant amount of investment has recently been put into further development of services at Dewsbury.Medicine and Elderly Medicine are integrated. The Medical Directorate has eight wards and a total of (211 beds) including acute elderly, admissions, various medical subspecialties, rehabilitation & palliative care.
