The surrounding area
The district encompasses some 520 square miles, including part of the Yorkshire Dales,
justly famous for its beauty and offering many opportunities for outside activities.
Harrogate is equidistant from London and Edinburgh and there are excellent connections by intercity rail links and motorways. The Universities of York and Leeds are close by. The Leeds/Bradford Airport for national and international connections is also conveniently close.
The main towns are Harrogate, Knaresborough and Ripon. Originally a spa town in the Victorian era, Harrogate has developed a new role as a national and international conference centre but it has retained much of its older charm.
There is a very good choice of housing in a variety of town and country settings. The range of state and public schools is wide, including a number of special schools, and standards are high.
Harrogate and District NHS Foundation trust
Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust is the principal provider of hospital services to the people of Harrogate and Rural District and also to Ripon, Wetherby and surrounding area. This represents a catchment area of approximately 184,000 people.
The Trust was established in 1992, and since that time has been very successful in developing a wide range of high quality local services. Over the same period, the new District Hospital building programme has been completed, providing accommodation of a high standard. The Trust was awarded three stars in the latest national performance ratings for the NHS.
Primary Care, Community Services and Mental Health Services are provided by the Craven, Harrogate and Rural District Primary Care Trust. Specialist tertiary referral services are predominantly provided by the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. A range of hospital services are also provided locally in partnership with York Health Services NHS Trust. Consultant staffing covers all the major acute specialties; there are currently 57 full and part time Consultants. The Medical and Elderly Division includes 11 General Physicians, each with a special interest, 2 Haematologists, 2 Rheumatologists and individual Specialists in Dermatology and Neurology. Oncology services are provided through links with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and York Hospitals NHS Trust.
There is an active Postgraduate Education Centre with a medical library at Harrogate District Hospital. New purpose-designed accommodation is available with high quality teaching facilities. Harrogate Medical Posts
Cardiology
The postholder will work for two cardiologists, Dr Mark Appleby and Locum to Dr Hugh Larkin. The main role is the care of 20-30 cardiology in-patients on the coronary care unit, acute medical admissions ward and the cardiology / respiratory Ward. There are daily consultant-lead CCU rounds, 1 general cardiology OPD clinic and 1 chest pain clinic. Experience will be gained in central lines, temporary pacing wires, cardiac U/S and cardioversion. There will be the opportunity to assist in the catheter lab with coronary angiograms, permanent pacemakers, transoesophageal echo and other interventional procedures.
Diabetes
The diabetes team consists of 2 consultant physicians, Dr P Hammond and Dr S Ray, a consultant chemical pathologist, Dr M Toop, 1 SpR, an FY2 in metabolic medicine, an FY1 trainee and 3 diabetes nurse specialists. In addition to general medical, diabetes and endocrine clinics seeing the full spectrum of conditions, there are specialist endocrine pregnancy, osteoporosis, endocrine surgery, young adult diabetes and diabetic foot clinics. There are close links with other teams, including renal and eye clinic, providing additional training opportunities for interested trainees. There is a weekly educational team meeting based around patient cases, in addition to the other general medical educational sessions, and an extended meeting once a month for audits and other presentations. There is a nurse-led day unit where trainees can be involved with dynamic endocrine function testing. Third and fifth year students are attached to the department on a regular basis.
Gastroenterology
The postholder works for the 2 gastroenterologists in Harrogate, Dr Garth Davies and Dr Jo Ridpath. The main role is care of a mixture of general medicine and specialty gastroenterology in-patients. We usually have 10-20 in patients at any one time, depending on the cycle of on-call activity. There are 2 out patient clinic per week, mostly gastroenterology. There is general medical on call experience.
Rheumatology
This is a highly organised clinical teaching unit run by two consultants seeing the full ranges of arthritides and connective tissue disease. Every patient seen in our clinics is reviewed with the consultant, so providing the ideal training opportunity. We have subspecialty clinics covering the whole range of rheumatological conditions on a regular basis, which facilitates this teaching process, and improves patient care. We also have an active research program running a numbers of clinical studies. We have a full multidisciplinary team and have regular meetings, both business and social, which is key for our team morale and department development.
