Castle Hill

The surrounding area

The area is an interesting area of England with its hilly urban and rural Pennine landscape characterised by traditional stone built houses, hill farms, rivers, reservoirs and rolling moors.  Britain’s best known walk, the ‘Pennine Way’ passes through the West of the Trust’s catchment area and the Peak District National Park lies a few miles south west of Huddersfield.  Sporting facilities, the Arts, and entertainments are well served locally.

Huddersfield Royal Infirmary

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust is proud of it’s three star performance rating and became a Foundation Trust on 1 August 2006.  The Trust provides 24 hour acute healthcare services to more than 420,000 people in the two areas served by the Metropolitan Boroughs of Calderdale and Kirklees, with some of its services provided to a much a wider population.  The Trust has three hospitals serving this attractive part of Yorkshire.

Huddersfield Royal Infirmary opened in 1965 but has been updated and added to over the years.  A significant amount of money has been spent on a women’s unit on the infirmary site upgrading the maternity wards, a new oncology/haematology ward to strengthen cancer services, a new nursery and crèche, extension of the Accident and Emergency department and new theatres.  The pathology laboratory services have also been consolidated.  A new urology and surgical assessment unit is being developed.  In addition the Trust has bought the Acre Mill site opposite the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and is looking to develop services on the site as part of its service and estates strategy.  The Huddersfield Royal Infirmary has around 420 beds. There are 239 beds for Medicine and Elderly including provision for a Medical Assessment Unit and Rehabilitation Stroke Unit.  Consultants staff the department with expertise in Cardiology, Care of the Elderly, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Haematology, Neurology, Palliative Care, Respiratory, Rheumatology and we have a visiting renal physician. There are excellent Postgraduate facilities at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.  There are joint meetings for hospital staff and general practitioners.  The elderly and medical department both hold weekly lunchtime clinical meetings and have regular audit meetings.

Huddersfield Medical posts

Elderly Medicine

Elderly Medicine is a challenging speciality, which offers a holistic approach, combining an interesting mix of clinical and ethical issues.  There are 4 Consultants (Dr Naylor, Dr Rana, Dr Sliwo and Dr Seebass), 2 Registrars, 1 Staff Grade Physician and a number of CMTs and Foundation trainees. The department is very active and has beds for both acute and chronic problems. There are rehabilitation beds for Stroke and also a falls service.

Diabetes

Treatments in diabetes mellitus and endocrinology have advanced significantly during the last few years.  The increasing prevalence of diabetes and evolutions of care make it an important area of knowledge for medical training for doctors in secondary and increasingly in primary care. The post is based in Ward 11 at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. The postholder participates in the care of patients with general medical conditions admitted from the acute take. The specialist interest involves patients with diabetes mellitus, mainly in the acute aspects of their condition, but also sometimes with chronic complications.  There is the opportunity to see patients in the weekly diabetic clinic to encounter other aspects of the disorder. This clinic runs with a multi-disciplinary team involving diabetic specialist nurses and podiatry.  Endocrinology is mainly an out-patient specialty and attendance at these clinics is also possible. The department has two consultants and a specialist registrar and two F1 trainees.  There are regular audit meetings and teaching sessions for all staff. A post in diabetes/endocrinology and general medicine provides an invaluable background to a career in medicine.
