Dermatology

This is a 4 year training scheme and entry to the programme is at ST3.

The rotation is based at

  • Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (6 posts)
  • York Health Care NHS Trust (1 post)
  • Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (1 post)
  • The Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust (1 post)
  • Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Trust (1 post)

 

There are 10 post in total in the rotation and the training programme comprises two 6 months posts based at District General Hospitals in the Yorkshire region and 3 years based at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (The General Infirmary at Leeds and St James’s University Hospital). Comprehensive training in general dermatology will be provided throughout the 4 year rotation. Sub-speciality training will be obtained principally at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This will include specialist training in the management of in-patients with severe dermatological disease, dermato-pathology, contact allergy, laser therapy, photobiology, paediatric dermatology, advanced dermatological surgery, connective tissue diseases, genital dermatology, non melanoma skin cancer and melanoma.  Trainees will also gain experience in acute/emergency dermatology by carrying out on-call duties in rotation for the 4 years of their training.

Postgraduate outpatient teaching occurs every Friday afternoon (1.00pm-5.00pm). This consists of a Journal club, clinical cases, seminars and histopathology teaching/meeting. Once a month there is a regional postgraduate meeting, consisting of a visiting speaker and a regional clinical meeting.

Study leave is granted for relevant courses or meetings. There are unlimited facilities for clinical research. There are also opportunities for laboratory work via the Skin Research Centre and at St James’s Hospital, with equipment and technical help for microbiological, mycological, serological, immunological, biochemical or histological research. There are several major fields of interest in the Department.  

A dedicated full day for research is available and candidate wishing to take time out of programme for a higher degree would be given every encouragement.

Trainees are also expected to take part in the teaching of clinical students of the University of Leeds - 210 students per annum are taught in their fourth year.
