Haematology
This is a 5 year training scheme and entry to the program is at ST3 level.
The rotation is based at
- Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (8 posts)
- York Health Care NHS Trust (1 post)
- Bradford Hospitals NHS Trust (3 posts)
- The Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust (1 post)
- Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Trust (3 posts)
- National Blood Service (1 post)
The training scheme is divided into east and west rotations. Trainees appointed to the East rotation will gain their DGH experience at Hull/York, whilst those on the West rotation will be attached to Bradford/Mid-Yorkshire Hospitals. All trainees will spend approximately 50% of their training in the Leeds teaching Hospitals. A New Oncology Wing, due to open Jan 2008, will centralize in-patient haematology across the city at St James Hospital Leeds, which also houses the regional Haemophilia centre. Comprehensive training in general Clinical and Laboratory Haematology will be provided throughout the rotation. Most subspecialty training will be delivered at Leeds Teaching Hospitals including Paediatrics, coagulation, BMT, HMDS (Regional Diagnostic Service) and blood transfusion. This is supplemented by further coagulation and autologous transplant experience during the trainees’ DGH attachments.
A weekly Thursday afternoon teaching session is provided for all trainees in the region and every other spring a lecture-based coagulation course is held for those studying for the MRCPath PT 1. There are regular regional scientific meetings which usually include speakers from around the UK. As well as individual trust audit projects, there is also a strong regional audit program which trainees may participate in.
Trainees are encouraged to attend relevant courses as part of their preparation for the MRCPath examinations, and study leave is also granted to attend national/international scientific meetings. There is a very active research program in both clinical and laboratory haematology, particularly within malignant haematology. Support will be offered to those wishing to take time out from training to undertake full time research to obtain a higher degree.
