Respiratory Medicine - Appraisal and Assessment

Please visit the JRCPTB website for details of the Curriculum and shortly an indication of the ways in which competency will be checked in the future. We are already assessing trainees by educational supervision, miniPAT (360degree), DOPS and miniCEx. All the Consultants are keen to support trainees and we welcome your queries and suggestions.

Presently the minimum requirements for trainees each year are as follows:-

  • Eight respiratory structured training days in Yorkshire
  • Three and a half General Medicine structured training days in Yorkshire
  • Two days at national or international specialist society meetings(BTS, ERS, ATS)

In addition we encourage attendance at other training in Respiratory & General Medicine in the UK – if oncall rotas prevent you from achieving the minimum targets for Yorkshire training days these other training days may be used to reach the target.

Yorkshire Deanery courses are important to attend during your training especially the core and higher management course, research skill course and skills in effective teaching course.

We are also keen for you to undertake regular audits in Respiratory & General Medicine and take a keen interest in service development.

Make sure that you complete and return the relevant forms to enrol for training in Respiratory & General Medicine training with the JRCPTB and deal with other official paperwork as quickly as possible throughout your training. Record all your activity in your eportfolio. Ensure that you take care to stay within the rules with respect to patient confidentiality.

For the present cohort of SpRs, annual assessments take place in June each year usually(RITAs). I anticipate that the ARC will take place about that time of year to allow us to establish training needs and review the record of competences met as a prelude for organising new placements from the first Monday in October.
