Special Arrangements - Academic Arrangements
We aim to provide training in basic research skills for all of our trainees, via the generic CMT day-release training sessions. For those with the aptitude and enthusiasm to seek academic training posts and a higher level of experience, we would wish to assist in the provision of opportunities such as academic foundation posts. It is for this reason that academic representatives from our two local medical schools (Leeds and HYMS) have been appointed to our Full Management Committee.

Clinical Lecturer Posts 2008
Leeds West
There are THREE Walport clinical lecturer posts to be appointed in 2008. The planned research should link to the strengths of the Institutes (see below Research in Leeds West). Clinical training appropriate to the specialty training needs of the individual will be available.
IN ADDITION there will be vacancies arising in the current clinical lecturer and academic SpR schemes but these are under review to align with the new training plans for academics, MMC reorganisation and the strengths of the Institutes (see below). There may also be opportunities for research in Medical Education.

Research in Leeds West
The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT), Leeds Mental Health Teaching Trust, and University of Leeds (Faculty of Medicine and Health) have a joint vision of excellence in clinical research, teaching and service provision. The Faculty has consolidated its research strengths into three centres of excellence – the Institute for Health Sciences (IHS), the Leeds Institute for Genetics, Health and Therapeutics (LIGHT) and the Leeds Institute for Molecular Medicine (LIMM). The development of the Institutes has been supported by a £40m capital programme and new “state-of-the-art” laboratories and offices have been commissioned on the contiguous University and Leeds General Infirmary sites, and the St James Hospital campus.

Programmes of research for lectureships will map on to the combined strengths of the Trusts and University. They relate directly to the research being undertaken in the University’s research institutes (cardiovascular disease/diabetes, cancer/molecular medicine have been identified as ‘peaks of excellence’ within the University) and fall within the acute Trust’s ‘strong research programmes’: cardiovascular disease, cancer and pathology, molecular genetics. The programme in psychiatry links the Leeds Mental Health Teaching Trust with the Institute for Health Sciences and falls within the Trusts three "strong research programmes" in psychosocial aspects of physical health, mental health services research and psychological therapies. Links are encouraged with basic scientists in the University and with the wider health community through health services research.
