School of Paediatrics

A Yorkshire School of Paediatrics has been established to organise run-through training. The school’s responsibilities will be:

  2. To plan rotations from entrance at ST1 until completion of training at ST8.
  3. To issue portfolios and logbooks and keep records of progress of all trainees from ST1-8 and to verify that training and assessments have been completed to a satisfactory degree.
  4. To establish a seamless training programme based on the RCPCH Master course and a modular training programme (ST1-ST3), this would progress into the MSc programme (ST4-ST6) and then to a final specialist programme (ST7-ST8).
  5. To provide administrative support to the planning and organisation of training meetings for ST1-8 trainees.
  6. The School's training programme is based around the following documentation and trainees are recommended to look at the following; 'A Guide to Postgraduate Specialty Training in the UK' (Gold Guide), the GMC Good Medical Practice, the RCPCH competency assessment documents and PMETB paediatric curriculum.

Registration

On appointment to a run-through training slot in the Yorkshire Deanery all specialty trainees are expected: -

  1. Register with the Yorkshire Deanery using Form R - Form R
  2. Register with the School of Paediatrics - Contacts
  3. Register with the RCPCH - RCPCH website

RCPCH Master Course: This is being launched by the RCPCH in early 2007 and is a web based teaching programme to help doctors complete the RCPCH training but also incorporates the competencies required to become a paediatrician. It is a modular based programme consisting of 8 modules, starting with the normal child. The course is aimed at enabling the Trainee to obtain a sound understanding of both the ‘well’ child and paediatric disorders, enabling them to obtain MRCPCH within 2-3 years.

Modular Training Programme

Course Structure ST1-ST3 (Competency Level 1)

Work Based Training: This remains an essential part of paediatric training. Teaching on ward rounds, in outpatients and in the accident and emergency department remains crucial. It also provides the essential basis for the maintenance of a portfolio and log book. Trainees will be expected to provide written evidence of procedures completed, a selection of cases seen and reflective practice.

Private Study Component: To enter the Run Through Training Programme in Yorkshire it will be compulsory to join the RCPCH Master Course Programme. This is a web based programme designed to be undertaken as private study. All trainees will be expected to keep a portfolio and logbook.

Taught Course Component: Trainees will be expected to attend a series of modular courses a year. This course will be held twice each year to enable everyone to have an opportunity to attend. It will be designed around individual modules of the Master Course Programme as well as including journal reviews, case presentations and topical issues. Logbooks and portfolios will be reviewed and assessed during these sessions. Please see attached (STEP programme)

Course Structure ST4-ST6 Masters in Medical Science (Competency Level 2)

Work Based Training: Regular review through work based educational supervisors will remain an integral part of assessment. These will include the maintenance of a portfolio, regular 360 degree assessment and involvement in case presentations.

Taught Courses: All ST4-ST6 trainees will attend the MSc (Paediatrics) course. This consists of 6 modules per year (5 days each) for 2 years. The third year will be for completing a dissertation around a specific research topic. More details are available MSc

Private study component: All trainees will maintain a portfolio of self directed learning, including keeping up to date with paediatric literature and maintenance of a portfolio.

Research: Trainees will be expected to design and plan a suitable research project based around their special interest for completion during year ST6. It is expected that the results of such research will be presented at college meetings and submitted for publication.

Course Structure ST6/7-ST8 (Competency Level 3)

Work Based Training: All trainees will be expected to have either developed a ‘special expertise’ in a particular area of paediatrics (e.g. diabetes, epilepsy, respiratory diseases, child protection etc.) or to have entered a National Grid training programme. Trainees will be expected to contribute to regionally held training meetings.

Training Courses: Trainees as part of the regional in course assessment will identify deanery courses which they need to attend leading towards the completion of their training programme and application to consultant post. All trainees will be expected to develop leadership and management skills and to take a lead role in organising paediatric training in their region.
