The Leeds Radiology Training Academy will be an educational environment containing modern multimedia facilities, simulations, exercises, library resources, and areas for peer-group work. The Academy is being built within the heart of Leeds General Infirmary with redevelopment of the existing Radiology teaching centre.

The ITI programme requires the development of specialised learning resources for the trainees. The Academy is the facility for the delivery of this training using three main educational approaches:
Electronic learning database (ELD)
The ELD is an electronic learning resource fulfilling the RCR curriculum delivered in 400 20-minute interactive multimedia packages.
These teaching packages include self and formal assessment on validated cases stored on a validated image archive within the academy.
The sessions and cases are nationally validated and peer reviewed with preparation commissioned by accepted experts in their field.
They are produced and updated centrally by the ELD project team.
This work will be undertaken in the e-learning rooms which are equipped for a whole year group to work together either preparing for tutorials, reporting from PACS or undertaking electronic learning.

Electronic tutorials
Electronic tutorials involve the use of Web based teleconferencing technology to perform interactive case review teaching.
Removing the geographical link between trainer and trainee increases the number of trainees who can benefit from teaching at any one time point and broadens the range of trainers available for teaching.
This type of teaching will take place in one of the three tutorial rooms within the academy.

Skills Laboratory
Skills laboratories are for the development of radiology skills in the academy.
Techniques based upon hands-on training including phantom ultrasound simulators, vascular simulators, and ultrasound scanning training using models.
There will be dedicated ultrasound machines for learning scanning techniques on patients in the department and for scanning within the academy on non-patient subjects.
