Postgraduate Specialty Schools
Mr David Wilkinson, Head of Yorkshire School of Surgery
I was appointed Head of the Yorkshire School of Surgery in March 2008. The appointment panel included representatives from the Deanery, the Royal College of Surgeons of England, The University of Leeds Medical School, The Hull York Medical School and local employers.
I originate from Newcastle, graduated from Leeds Medical School and trained in general and vascular surgery in West Yorkshire. I was awarded MD in 1993 and in 1995 Bradford Teaching Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust appointed me as consultant surgeon. I am now a specialist vascular surgeon with an interest in surgery for critical limb ischaemia and vascular access surgery.
My educational interests include undergraduate training, I helped oversee the expansion of Leeds Medical School into Bradford, and within postgraduate education I have been Co-Director of the West Yorkshire Foundation School since its inception in 2006. I have been a member of the Core Surgery training committee as a college tutor for Bradford Teaching Hospitals.
The aims of the School of Surgery are:
- To prepare and equip surgeons to meet the challenges of surgical practice and deliver the highest standard of care for patients
- To deliver surgical education programmes within the Yorkshire Deanery that meet PMETB quality standards and embrace College guidelines and ethos
- To recognise and respond to the needs of our trainees, trainers and their employers
