Postgraduate Specialty Schools
The Yorkshire Deanery is in the process of developing a number of Specialty Schools. Specialty Schools are Deanery structures for managing specialty training that will bring together the relevant Royal College/College/Faculty, the Deanery, the NHS and other providers of training. Each Specialty School will have a Management Committee drawn from the institutions and groups that contribute to training, as well as other stakeholders. They will provide a structure for educational governance and set the direction for the development of Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) in that specialty within the Yorkshire Deanery.
Aims of the Schools
- to deliver the education and training to the standards set by the Royal
College/College/Faculty and PMETB - to set up quality control mechanisms that reflect the Postgraduate Medical and Education Training Board (PMETB) agreed curricula to the standards set out by PMETB and the relevant Royal College / College / Faculty
- to promote excellence in all aspects of the work of the School
- to support and encourage innovation in training and education
The PMETB “domains” that must be reflected in quality control mechanisms for medical education and training, and for which the Deanery through each Specialty School will be accountable, are:
- Patient Safety
- Quality assurance, review and evaluation
- Equality and Diversity and Opportunity
- Recruitment, selection and appointment
- Delivery of curriculum including assessment
- Support and development of trainees, trainers and local faculty
- Management of Education and Training
- Educational resources and capacity
Head of School
Each Specialty School will have a Head of School, a consultant in the specialty appointed jointly by the Deanery and the relevant Royal College/College/Faculty. The Head of School will be managerially accountable to the Deanery but professionally responsible to the Royal College/ College /Faculty.
