Leave Arrangements
Absence from Duty due to Illness
It is the SpR’s responsibility to confirm the reporting arrangements for sickness when commencing duty at each hospital in which they work. All sickness absence must be reported regardless of whether locum cover is required or not. If an SpR is sick for more than 7 consecutive days, a doctor’s certificate should be sent to the Medical Personnel Department at the Yorkshire Deanery. Copies will then be forwarded to the trust in which they are working at that time. Please note: payment of both occupational and statutory sick pay is dependent on the appropriate reporting and certification of sick leave. Failure to follow the procedure and submit the requisite doctors sick notes will result in sick pay being withheld until the certificates are produced.
If an SpR is absent from duty on a long term basis, he/she must keep in contact with the consultant supervising their training regarding progress. SpR’s should also inform their consultant of the intended date of return giving as much notice as possible.
Study Leave
Full details of the study leave arrangements are provided with the contract of employment issued to SpRs. Further copies can be obtained from the Medical Personnel Department at the Yorkshire Deanery, the Postgraduate Medical Education Center of the relevant Trust or the Deanery web site. Applications for study leave must be submitted as far in advance as possible to the Postgraduate Medical Education Center at the Trust where SpR's carry out their duties. SpR's should be aware that some training programems operate modular training which may affectad hoc study leave applications.
Please do not send applications for study leave or expenses claim forms to the Medical Personnel department at the Deanery. They should be sumbitted via the Specialty Study Leave advisor to the Postgraduate Medical Education Centre in the trust in which the SpR is working.
Annual Leave
Applications for annual leave should be authorised by the consultant with whom you will be working at the time of the leave. The forms should then be submitted to the Personnel Department of the trust in which the SpR is / will be working at the time of the leave. This may not always be the same trust in which you are working at the time you make the application. Annual leave entitlement at each stage of the rotation must be taken. Accrued leave cannot be carried over to the next stage of the rotation. If you are unable to take annual leave before you leave a placement due to onerous service commitment, you may apply to the trust in which the leave was untaken to be paid in lieu for outstanding days. Please note that you will be required to apply in writing to request this. Payment will only be made on receipt of written confirmation from the trust making the payment.
